Eighteen months ago, I could not have told you what the gospel of my salvation was. I, like many, thought to be saved, you had to repent, ask Jesus into your heart, and live a good life, obeying the 10 Commandments to the best of my ability, and ask for forgiveness when I fell. I did not realize that by believing this, I was counting on my performance in obedience for my salvation, and not placing my faith completely in the perfect and completed work of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross! Coming from a 2 1/2 year stint in the Pentecostal church, I was taught that I must walk a certain way, live a certain way, abstain from those things that offered temptation, or else I could lose my salvation. How sad this was.... being the typical lazy believer, instead of opening and reading my Bible, and studying to show myself approved unto God (2 Tim. 2:15), I allowed the pastor of that Pentecostal church to study enough for the both of us! The problem with that, was that where he was wrong, now I was wrong. In studying the unique gospel of the risen Christ, revealed to the apostle Paul, I found that these things were simply not true. I think Ephesians 1:12-14 explains best the fact that a believer can NOT lose their salvation. As for the gospel of our salvation, we must simply believe that Christ, who was without sin, was made sin for us (2 Corin. 5:21), was crucified for my sins, was buried, resurrected, and ascended into heaven to justify me to the Father. In this way, God no longer looks at me and sees my sin, but rather sees the cross. How arrogant, to believe that there is something that I need to ADD to this plan! His work is complete, and by knowing and believing this, I am complete in Christ (Colossians 2:8-10).
